Northowram is a hill village east of Halifax, about two miles from 16 Albion Court, Halifax HX1 1YN, and those two miles are up. The village is stone: cottages, terraces and later houses gathered around a centre that still has a library. Lydgate is the library address. Shibden Park and Shibden Hall are below the village, on Godley Lane, closer to the main road than to the highest lanes. People use Shibden as a landmark and then discover their new house is a further climb. Tell us the street, not only the village. Lanes are the removal problem. Some are wide enough for a van. Some are not, once a resident's car is outside. Walls are close. A wing mirror and a stone gatepost do not negotiate. If we need to stop at the bottom and carry, we need to know before the day, because a carry up a lane is the job, not a surprise. Northowram Recreation Ground is on the council's list of local spaces. It is a better pin than "near the church" if there is more than one turn you could mean. Houses often have thick walls, small windows and stairs that were built for people, not for king-size beds. We take frames apart when that is the safe route. Cellars and lofts should be mentioned. A village house can look modest from the lane and still hold a family's worth of furniture. Gardens step down the hill. Sheds at the bottom are easy to forget. Postcodes are HX3. Calderdale Council covers tax and bins. Boothtown and the A58 are the way many people drive down toward town and toward Shibden. Shelf is along the top toward Bradford. Hipperholme is the other direction. There is no station in the village. Halifax station is the usual rail point, downhill. Insurance is provided. Ask us what is covered when you book.
